There’s just something about having the whole family together in the morning in the kitchen. Probably because it’s so rare! On those few days a year when it does happen for us (usually at Thanksgiving and Christmas), a family favorite of ours is Schmarren. That’s short for Kaiserschmarren, which means “emperor’s mess.” The name comes from the Austrian emperor (Kaiser) Franz Joseph who was very fond of this dish. In our family, my mother-in-law brought this recipe from “the old country” (Serbia). My wife grew up with it, she prepared it as our sons grew up, and now it will be their turn to pass it on. Simple to make, sweet to the taste and warm to the heart, I hope you’ll enjoy Schmarren—and mornings as a family together—as much as we do.
